The shipper’s new freight-tech frontier

For most businesses today, technology is no longer a want. It’s a need that drives results. We saw this reflected in a recent HAQM Freight survey where 40% of shippers rated having the most advanced technology as “extremely important,” and 49% chose “very important.”

Aligning with these priorities, freight technology is constantly evolving. This new freight-tech frontier is poised to improve the supply chain ecosystem and help shippers transport goods more efficiently, securely, and predictably.

However, our research unearthed a surprising roadblock. Shippers are hesitant to switch freight providers, even when in pursuit of more reliable freight technology. In fact, only 19% of the shippers we surveyed were “extremely open” to switching. According to the survey, uncertainty surrounding integration processes and possible service disruptions could keep many from unlocking their full logistics potential.

The foundation: 4 shared company goals

Whether it’s in the office or out on the road, shippers want technology that powers efficiency. But this isn’t the only shared priority. Our survey uncovered four specific company goals that transcend business types and product categories. They include:

  • Generating revenue growth
  • Increasing the use of technology
  • Improving the efficiency of operations
  • Reducing the cost of doing business

Digging deeper, we discovered an underlying theme for all four of these goals—tech-driven innovation. When shippers work with a provider (or providers) who offer advanced freight-tech solutions, the result is operational enhancements.

For example, working with a freight provider that uses advanced optimization techniques for route planning improves transportation efficiency and can lead to time savings on the road. Less time on the road means faster deliveries. Faster deliveries lead to happier customers. And happier customers make repeat purchases, which grows revenue and contributes to greater density—a great way to realize cost savings.

When this “freight transportation ripple effect” is built on a firm freight-tech foundation, it can drive serious results for your business.

What types of tech?

Leveraging technology in freight shipping isn’t just a buzzword for shippers, it’s a legitimate pursuit. According to our research, there are three key capabilities shippers expect from their freight provider.

The first is advanced data security, which was selected by 40% of respondents. Cybersecurity is a concern for many businesses, which makes freight providers offering robust security capabilities stand out. The second are customizable APIs (chosen by 39% of respondents). APIs are essentially the piping between your system and your freight provider’s so all parties have access to quotes and tendering and tracking data. They can be a gamechanger (and timesaver).

Finally, 36% of respondents indicated that shipment tracking and visibility tools were must-haves. Being able to see where a shipment is and when it will arrive is a top priority for shippers and their customers. Better tracking can lead to happier customers and stronger shipper/provider relationships. We know how important this is for customers and are giving even better updates on the status of their loads.

Routing decisions are an important part of freight movements, affecting everything from the cost of delivering a load to when it will arrive. It might seem like the shortest distance between two points is the best option, but that isn’t always the case.
Freight logistics goes beyond moving goods from A to B. When your bottom line is built on successful deliveries, middle-mile efficiency and communication are essential to business operations. This is why many shippers want more than a transactional relationship with their freight provider.
