How a 3PL found calm in the logistics storm with HAQM Freight

When you work in the world of logistics, some days are filled with chaos and uncertainty: warehouse workers need to be managed, trailers tracked, inventory managed, forklifts fixed…the list never ends.

Hanna Xu is familiar with those type of days as a project manager for JW Fulfillment. “Information and communication are critical,” she says. “I’m constantly on the phone or at my desk passing along information or receiving it so I can make my next decision quickly.”

With HAQM Freight, she’s found a shipping provider that is a sense of calm in the logistics storm.

A fulfilling responsibility

JW Fulfillment is a third-party logistics (3PL) provider with more than 20 warehouses across the U.S. and Canada. They rely on a variety of shipping modes, including full truckload, less-than-truckload, and small parcel (some of it via HAQM Shipping).

They move an assortment of goods: anything from bulky outdoor furniture to pallets of kettle balls. Like most 3PLs, on-time performance is critical, along with shipment tracking, seamless booking, and flexible capacity. “We have a lot of variables and seasonality trends at play that makes for a very dynamic shipping environment,” says Xu.

The bulk of what they are shipping goes inbound to HAQM’s fulfillment centers in preparation for their last-mile delivery to the end customer. That’s where HAQM Freight comes in.

Gazebo season made easy

At its core, the relationship between Xu and her dedicated transportation consultant is what keeps the loads moving. Disruptions are inevitable in transportation and “Dan (her consultant) is always available when there are issues,” she says. So, when she has a question about a shipment or an update to give, there’s someone on the other end to pick up the phone.

Along with her consultant, Xu relies on the HAQM Freight portal to book her loads. She can input her origin and destination and get quotes up to 14 days out. When the load is on the road, she’s fed a steady stream of details such as when the driver was assigned and dispatched and full progress updates. “It’s one easy place to manage it all.”

Volume surges are another challenge for JW Fulfillment that HAQM Freight helps overcome. Xu sees the typical spikes that come during the holiday season and HAQM Prime Days but also more product specific periods of heightened demand. “When the weather warms up, that means it’s gazebo shipping time for us.”

HAQM Freight has the capacity and flexibility to meet those needs. With more than 70,000 trailers and access to a diverse supply of power sources, HAQM Freight can help JW Fulfillment accommodate the rollercoaster of volume changes. They take advantage of HAQM Freight’s drop trailer pool to get even more operational flexibility.

What Xu also appreciates is that HAQM Freight always has the door open for consultations and feedback, whether that’s through quarterly business reviews or impromptu phone calls.

In particular, Xu recently had some ideas on how to better process purchase orders (POs) and consolidate shipments. “It felt like my voice was heard when I gave my input,” she recalls. “HAQM Freight was willing to experiment with us to improve the PO process. They’re not afraid to hear what their customers are experiencing and then take an action.”

Routing decisions are an important part of freight movements, affecting everything from the cost of delivering a load to when it will arrive. It might seem like the shortest distance between two points is the best option, but that isn’t always the case.
Freight logistics goes beyond moving goods from A to B. When your bottom line is built on successful deliveries, middle-mile efficiency and communication are essential to business operations. This is why many shippers want more than a transactional relationship with their freight provider.
For most businesses today, technology is no longer a want. It’s a need that drives results. This new freight-tech frontier is poised to improve the supply chain ecosystem and help shippers transport goods more efficiently, securely, and predictably.
